Kalkidan Shobe, born in 1992 in Hawassa, Ethiopia, discovered his passion for art at a young age, influenced by his mother’s talent for weaving and sewing. As a child, he would sketch designs for her garments, laying the foundation for his artistic journey. Although his father hoped he would pursue architecture, Kalkidan remained dedicated to art, honing his skills throughout school. Encouraged by his art teachers, he aspired to study at Addis Ababa University's art school, but his plans were initially thwarted when the program was full. Despite this setback, he continued to pursue art, eventually leaving civil engineering studies to attend Alle Design and Art School.
Graduating in 2014, Kalkidan specialized in Easel and Mural Art and established Shobe Studio, where he works as a full-time artist and designer. His work, characterized by vibrant and expressive forms, reflects his deep passion for creativity over commercial gain. He has participated in multiple group and solo exhibitions, becoming a recognized figure in Ethiopia’s art scene. Through his teaching at a fashion design college, Kalkidan continues to inspire future generations of artists, staying true to his vision of creating art that speaks to both beauty and intensity.
